There are plenty of Events happening in 2014 to get you out of the house.  Everything from cultural to adventurous ---- make a day of it. A  day's itinerary could include participating in an excruciating bike race in the morning and then relaxing to sounds of bluegrass with a mug of local brew in the afternoon. FloydFest 2014


July 23-27, 2014 ~ FloydFest 2014!

A celebration of music and art nestled in the beautiful Blue Ridge Mountains of southwest Virginia!

FloydFest features over 50 performers on 7 stages! The 80-acre mountain plateau offers camping, a progressive ‘Global Village’ area of workshops and demonstrations, over 100 artisans and crafters, food offerings ranging from pulled-pork BBQ to fresh sushi to hand-churned ice cream, a comprehensive healing arts area, and a Children’s Universe, featuring stage performances geared toward children, puppetry, workshops, playground equipment and babysitting services.

The festival is located at milepost 170.5 off the scenic Blue Ridge Parkway.

July 25, 2014 ~ WineDown Friday at the Draper Mercantile, 5:00p

July 2014 ~ VA Tech Center for the Arts presents the newest cultural exhibition, OpenLab: Motion + eMotion and Fields + Array

Exhibition runs through July 27, 2014 at the Ruth C. Horton Gallery, Miles C. Horton Jr. Gallery, and Sherwood Payne Quillen ’71 Reception Gallery

Motion + eMotion is a selection of intricate kinetic sculptures that dramatically redefine space. This exhibition is a synthesis of art, architecture, and engineering. Created by Alireza Borhani and Negar Kalantar.

Fields + Array is an immersive architectural environment engaging both its components and the viewer with the shifting relationship of scale, light, and space. Created by Ashton Hamm, James Heard, Daniel Hemmendinger, Chelsea Kilburn, and Matthew Ridgeway, all recent graduates of the College of Architecture and Urban Studies.

July 28, 2014 ~ Radford Fiddle & Banjo Jam 7:00-10:00p at River City Grill, 103 Third Avenue, Radford VA 24141

Join us "almost every" Monday in 2014 for a Bluegrass Jam Session at the River City Grill. August 7, 2014 ~ First Thursday at Abingdon Arts Depot, 314 Depot Square, Abingdon VA 24212 from 5-8pm.

Every 1st Thursday of each month join us at the Arts Depot for live music by the Abingdon Thumb Strummers and working studio artists who display and sell their original pieces of art. 

Changing displays in our Spotlight and Members Gallery will be on display also.  Hop on a trolley to tour other art venues that are open.  Our live Bluegrass Music will be sure to delight, and our casual atmosphere makes this a must-do family evening!

August 22, 2014 ~ Mountain Lake Lodge presents Dirty Dancing Weekend!

Join us for this very special and memorable weekend. A fine meal at our own Harvest Restaurant, followed by a special showing of the Dirty Dancing movie in the ballroom. The evening continues with Karaoke and dancing in Mary's Barn until midnight!

Saturday begins with a full breakfast buffet followed by Dirty Dancing trivia and a Dirty Dancing Movie Scene Tour! There are private and group dance lessons available throughout the afternoon. And don't miss our own Sapphire Dancers in Mary's Barn!

July 25, 2014 ~ Naturalist Series: Birds and Blooms hosted by Mountain Lake Lodge

Excite your senses and immerse yourself in the natural world at Mountain Lake Lodge. Join the local experts for a mid-summer edition of our Naturalist Series program. Activities are scheduled Friday afternoon through Saturday evening, and include morning birding, a special session featuring the ruby-throated humminbird, and nocturnal (at night!) sights and sounds of the Appalachian summer.

August 8-9, 2014 ~ Newport Agricultural Fair 2014

Help us celebrate our 79th birthday this year at the oldest continuous agricultural fair in the state of the Virginia. This annual event is scheduled to kick-off Friday, August 8th at 4:00pm on the grounds of the Newport Recreation Center located off of Route 42 in Newport VA.

What's there to do? How about a Horse Show, Livestock Show, Forestry Field Day, Reptile Exhibit, Cake Walk, JOUSTING!

The largest fireworks display in Giles County will bring the Fair to a close on Saturday, August 9th!


August 15, 2014 ~ 3rd Fridays at the Narrows Farmer's Market, 5:00p until ??? the crowd decides!

Join friends and neighbors (or make NEW friends!) to shop for locally-grown produce, homemade baked goods, and fine crafts. At 8:30pm the Narrows Now 4H Club invites you to bring a chair or blanket and watch a family-oriented movie on the green. Local shops and restaurants will offer extended hours and specials.
